According to the National Literacy Trust, 20% of 11-year old's do not achieve the success in reading and writing expected of their age and this figure can be considerably higher in areas of social deprivation. Additionally, some 5% of adults have literacy levels no higher than that expected of a 5-year old - with all the implications this has on their employment prospects and self-confidence. BookRelief UK's mission is the promotion and advancement of literacy standards in the UK and developing countries.

Most of our UK-based work is currently in North Devon where we focus on training volunteer reading coaches to give one-to-one mentoring to primary school children who are slow or reluctant readers and to those adults who still struggle with literacy. These two programmes have met with a very satisfactory success rate since we began them in 2011 and 2012 respectively.

We also collect and sort used books - partly to raise funds for our local projects, and, in the case of educational, childrens', and and other suitable reading books, for sending to developing countries under our Books Overseas Programme.

Our patron is Devon-based childrens author Michael Morpurgo - perhaps best known as the author of War Horse.
