Careers guidance and training

Works for Us is an independent voluntary sector organisation and registered charity, established in Milton Keynes in 1978 (previously as MK Women & Work). Our aim is to help local people, primarily women, improve their employment prospects by providing advice and guidance and a variety of free training courses.

We are her to help if you:

  • need help to get a job?
  • feel uncertain about what career path to take?
  • need help writing a CV? need help to search and apply for jobs online?
  • lack confidence? feel unsure where to start following a career break or redundancy?

What help we provide will depend on what you tell us you need. However, this outlines the route that most of our clients follow:

1. Contact us and arrange to see an Information, Advice and Guidance Adviser either in a small group or on a one-to-one basis

2. Further meetings, on a one-to-one basis, with your Adviser to identify exactly what you want to achieve and to help you along the way. This may include: Developing a CV and learning how to adapt it for different jobs Identifying training you might need (this might be training we run or training offered by others) Helping you to identify the skills you have (lots of people come to us saying they are just a Mum but there are a lot of skills involved in being a Mum and running a house) Identifying the sort of work you might consider Thinking about whether you want to build your skills through suitable voluntary work

3. Undertaking training and/or voluntary work and/or going straight into job hunting

4. Staying in touch with us for further support along the way Not ready to go back to work yet, but need to get out of the house and start building confidence and contacts while doing something you enjoy?

Our Women Without Boundaries project is setting up activities and groups across Milton Keynes to bring women together to meet new friends, learn new or share existing skills, and grow in confidence. We also support people who are, or are looking to become self-employed, by hosting a monthly supported networking group Mums The Boss. Guest speakers and lots of sharing of ideas and contacts in a friendly supportive environment.

We promise to be welcoming, listen treat you with respect, understand YOUR situation, and find the best ways to help YOU for as long as you need.
